I don't know if the current USA versus the Swedes, Russians, and Canadians is the same situation. The Americans have a pretty good team, and if they did win, while it would be an upset, it wouldn't be one of that sort of proportion.

I do have to admit, though, that in this time of economic failure and political unrest, this country could really use a win like 1980, but the international political situation made it what it was then--the circumstances just aren't similar enough for it to have the same poignancy as it did 30 years ago.

Yeah, definitely not the same circumstance. If they did pull off the upset it might be a little surprising, or even shocking. But not quite the miracle that 1980 was.
